Today, I phoned Student Finance England to check whether they have received my old work contracts (from my time working in Thailand) and ask why when I check the status of my application online, it says “HE Maintenance Grant, Amount Requested N/A”.
They said they have received and scanned the first contract, but are still waiting for the second (or haven’t yet scanned it, which can sometimes take up to 10 days). Regarding the maintenance grant, I was told that “N/A” means they are waiting for information before making the assessment.
Read more about the HE Maintenance Grant.

Just to confirm, my application for student finance has now been approved and the “N/A” has now been replaced with a figure for the HE Maintenance Grant.
Hi what it the website where I apply for the maintenance grant. Thanks!
You can apply for a maintenance grant by following this link.
If you are on a low income, you might like to note that some universities offer special financial support. For example, I know of several PGCE students at King’s College London who received a bursary / award of about 1,300.
How is a HE maintenance grant different from the loan, apart from not having to pay it back? how do you qualify for it?
Hi Rachel,
If your combined household income is £25,000 or less then you should be eligible for the full £3,250 grant. There’s a sliding scale depending on income and I suggest you check here.
Good luck!
Brian
To quote that link:
Full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with living costs. Maintenance Grants are available to students whose household income is £42,875 or less. Your household income is your parents’ or partner’s income and your own.
The maximum Maintenance Grant is £3,250 a year if your household income is under £25,000.
